IBECC

International Business Ethics Case Competition

The International Business Ethics Case Competition (IBECC) is the oldest and most distinguished intercollegiate business ethics competition of its kind. IBECC was founded by Thomas I. White and designed with the assistance of Fortune 500 senior executives in 1996. It began as a program at Loyola Marymount University, expanded to include other schools and organizations, and became an independent 501c3 in 2019.

Each team selects a topic from any area of business ethics and prepares a presentation describing the problem and proposing a solution. Judges listen to the team’s presentation, question students and then give feedback. Presentations cover the legal, financial and ethical dimensions of the case, but special emphasis is placed on the strength of the ethical analysis of the problem and the ethical acceptability of the solution.

The competition consisted of three separate events, with each being scored independently. Focused on ethics, this event has participants develop and research their own mandate. Working for the past 3 months, the team brought forward the issue of exploring the ethical boundaries and negative effects of increasing employee production through modern monitoring tools. The target audience was Board of Directors of the three largest American public companies by number of employees (Walmart, Amazon, FedEx). They had a pragmatic solution that focused on building trust with the goal of restoring employee dignity.
